What does Exodus 34:13 mean?
The Israelites are being instructed to dismantle the religious sites of the people already living in Canaan as they enter the land. Altars, pillars, and Asherah poles were used in worship practices that the God of Israel explicitly opposed, so removing them was meant to prevent the Israelites from being drawn into those religions themselves. This command reflects the seriousness with which God addressed idolatry in Israel's early history, when the nation was settling in a land surrounded by cultures with very different spiritual practices.
