Exodus 34:12
“Be careful, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you are going, lest it be for a snare among you:”
What does Exodus 34:12 mean?
God is warning the Israelites about a very practical danger: if they make binding agreements with the people already living in Canaan, those relationships could pull them away from following God's ways. The word "snare" means a trap, suggesting that what looks like a helpful partnership might actually ensnare them in idolatry and unfaithfulness. This isn't really about being unfriendly to neighbors. Rather, Moses is cautioning the people that close political and religious ties with those who worship other gods could compromise their own faith and mission. It's a reminder that sometimes we need to be intentional about which influences we allow into our inner circles, especially during seasons when we're trying to live out our deepest values.
