What does Exodus 34:14 mean?

God's jealousy here isn't petty or insecure the way human jealousy often is. It's the fierce protection of a relationship that matters infinitely, like a parent's unwillingness to let their child be harmed. When God says his name is "Jealous," he's naming something central to who he is: he won't share your deepest loyalty with anything else because he knows that other gods (whether ancient idols or modern substitutes like money, status, or control) will ultimately destroy you. This comes after Moses received the Ten Commandments a second time, following Israel's worship of the golden calf. God isn't being demanding for its own sake, but rather drawing a line around what actually leads to human flourishing. He's saying: I love you too much to pretend it doesn't matter where your heart goes.
