“Moses said to God, “Behold, when I come to the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you;’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ What should I tell them?””
What does Exodus 3:13 mean?
Moses is about to return to Egypt with an impossible task, and his worry is very human: the people won't believe him unless he can prove God sent him. In that ancient world, knowing someone's name meant understanding their character and power, so asking "What is his name?" was really asking "Who are you, and why should we trust you?" Moses recognizes that people need more than a message from a stranger, even if that stranger is their relative. His question opens the door for God to reveal something intimate and true about his own identity, showing that God understands our doubts and meets us there with clarity rather than dismissal.
