What does Exodus 21:34 mean?

When someone's animal fell into another person's uncovered pit and died, the pit owner had to pay the animal's owner for the loss. This was a straightforward principle of accountability: if your property caused harm through negligence, you bore the financial responsibility for it. The passage reflects an ancient legal system concerned with fairness in everyday disputes. The compensation went to the animal's owner (who suffered the loss), while the dead animal itself became the pit owner's property, perhaps as a way to offset some of their cost. It's a reminder that carelessness has consequences, and communities function better when people take responsibility for the hazards they create.
