What does Exodus 21:33 mean?
When someone's carelessness creates a danger, they bear responsibility for the harm that follows. In ancient Israel, an uncovered pit wasn't just an inconvenience, it was a real hazard that could injure or kill valuable livestock (and potentially people). This law established that you can't simply ignore risks you've created and expect others to pay the price. The principle applies well beyond ancient agriculture: if your negligence puts others at risk, you're accountable for what happens as a result.
