What does Exodus 21:32 mean?
When someone's enslaved worker was killed by a negligent owner's bull, the law required the bull owner to pay thirty shekels of silver to the worker's master as compensation. The bull itself would then be put to death, removing the danger it posed. This was actually a protective measure in its time, establishing that owners bore real financial consequences for failing to control dangerous animals. While the system of slavery itself troubles us today, this law moved against the cultural norm of treating enslaved people as worthless by assigning them concrete monetary value in the eyes of the law. It set a floor for accountability when harm occurred through negligence, recognizing that human life, even in bondage, mattered.
