What does Exodus 21:35 mean?

When someone's animal caused damage in ancient Israel, the law required a practical solution: both the owner who lost an animal and the owner of the dangerous animal had to share the financial loss equally. They'd sell the living bull and split the money, then divide up the carcass of the dead one as well. This reflects a surprisingly balanced approach to accidents and shared responsibility. It wasn't about punishing negligence harshly, but about fairness when harm happened without intentional wrongdoing. The principle still resonates today: when accidents occur and people are hurt, there's often wisdom in both parties bearing some of the weight rather than one person losing everything. It acknowledges that life is unpredictable, and sometimes the fairest path forward is one where the burden is shared.
