What does Exodus 20:23 mean?

God is warning the Israelites against creating idols, even precious ones made of silver or gold, to worship alongside him. The command cuts to something deeper than just not carving statues, it's about refusing to let anything compete with their devotion to the one true God. Even things that seem valuable or beautiful can become false gods when we trust them or honor them above God himself. This speaks to a timeless human tendency: we're naturally drawn to create our own versions of security and meaning, whether through wealth, status, or other things we can see and touch.
