“Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and lived in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well.”
What does Exodus 2:15 mean?
Moses had just killed an Egyptian taskmaster while defending a Hebrew slave, and when Pharaoh found out, there was a price on his head. Rather than face execution, Moses ran for his life into the desert wilderness of Midian, leaving behind everything familiar—his position in Pharaoh's court, his people, his home. That simple image of him sitting by a well, exhausted and displaced, captures something real about what it means to flee for your life: you end up alone, far from help, with nothing but time to wonder what comes next. Yet this moment of apparent defeat and exile actually becomes the place where God reshapes Moses' entire life and purpose. Sometimes our hardest seasons of running, hiding, and waiting are actually God's way of preparing us for what he's about to do.
