“He said, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you plan to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian?” Moses was afraid, and said, “Surely this thing is known.””
What does Exodus 2:14 mean?
Moses had just intervened when he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew slave, and in his anger, he killed the Egyptian and hid the body. When another Hebrew man challenged him the next day, Moses realized his secret was out and that he'd made a dangerous enemy. His quick response came from genuine fear, both for his life and for his future. This moment captures Moses at a breaking point in his identity. Raised as Egyptian royalty, he'd chosen to defend his Hebrew people, but they didn't see him as their rescuer or leader. Instead, they saw him as a threat. His attempt to solve an injustice through violence had backfired completely, leaving him exposed and alone. Sometimes our impulse to fix things our own way, even with good intentions, teaches us painful lessons about our own limits and the need for God's timing rather than our immediate action.
