Ephesians 4:9

Now this, “He ascended”, what is it but that he also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?

What does Ephesians 4:9 mean?

Paul is wrestling with what Jesus's ascension back to heaven actually means. If Jesus went up, he's saying, then he must have come down first, which points to his incarnation, death, and burial. The "lower parts of the earth" isn't about hell or the underworld in a literal sense, but simply the depths of human experience, suffering, and mortality that Jesus entered when he became one of us. This verse reminds us that Jesus's return to heaven wasn't about escaping the world, but about completing a full descent into our broken reality and then rising victoriously through it. It's a beautiful way of saying that Christ has been all the way down into our pain and darkness, so his authority and comfort now come from that place of true understanding.
