What does Ephesians 4:8 mean?

Paul is quoting from Psalm 68 to explain what Jesus accomplished through his resurrection and ascension. The imagery of "leading captivity captive" means that Christ broke the power of sin and death that had held humanity in bondage, and in his victory, he freed us from that captivity. After ascending to heaven, Jesus then distributed spiritual gifts to his followers, empowering them to continue his work in the world. This passage reminds us that our freedom and our abilities to serve come from Christ's triumph, and they're meant to be shared generously within the community of believers.
