Ephesians 4:19

What does Ephesians 4:19 mean?
When we ignore our conscience repeatedly, we can become spiritually numb, the way a callus forms on skin from constant friction. Paul is describing what happens when people suppress their inner sense of right and wrong long enough that they stop feeling convicted at all, and instead pursue whatever desires feel good in the moment without restraint. The word "gave themselves up" suggests this isn't something that happens to us against our will, but rather a progressive choice we make. Each time we override our conscience, it becomes easier to do it again, until eventually we're pursuing harmful things openly and without shame. Paul uses strong language here not to condemn, but to show the real cost of ignoring that inner voice that prompts us toward something better.
