What does Ephesians 4:20 mean?

Paul is reminding the Ephesians that they've already encountered Jesus and his teachings, so they shouldn't go back to living the way they did before. He's gently calling them back to what they already know to be true about following Christ, which involves living honestly, speaking truth, and treating others with kindness rather than continuing in their old harmful patterns. It's like a parent saying to a child, "You know better than this," not out of shame but out of conviction that they're capable of more. The verse assumes that when we truly meet Jesus, that encounter changes us and gives us a better way to live.
