Ephesians 4:18

being darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their hearts;

What does Ephesians 4:18 mean?

Paul describes what happens when people turn away from God over time: their minds grow clouded, they become separated from the vitality that comes from knowing him, and their hearts become increasingly resistant to truth. The "darkening" he mentions isn't about stupidity, but about a spiritual blindness that develops when someone persistently ignores or rejects what they know to be true. It's less like someone who's never heard the gospel and more like someone whose repeated choices to look away have eventually made them unable to see clearly anymore. The tragedy here is that this condition is self-inflicted through hardening, yet it remains reversible if someone turns back toward God.
