What does Deuteronomy 9:25 mean?
Moses is describing a moment of desperate intercession on behalf of the Israelites. After they had broken God's covenant by worshiping the golden calf, God threatened to destroy them, but Moses threw himself into prayer, literally prostrating himself before the Lord for an extended period, asking God to show mercy instead of judgment. The "forty days and forty nights" echoes the time Moses spent on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments, suggesting the weight and seriousness of his prayer.
