Deuteronomy 16:13
“You shall keep the feast of tents seven days, after you have gathered in from your threshing floor and from your wine press.”
What does Deuteronomy 16:13 mean?
This verse describes one of Israel's three great annual festivals, celebrating the final harvest of the year. After the hard work of threshing grain and pressing grapes was complete, people were called to set aside a full week to give thanks and remember God's provision, living in temporary shelters as a reminder of their ancestors' wilderness journey. The timing is practical and spiritual at once: the command comes after the work is done, so people could actually leave their homes and gather together without abandoning their fields. For us today, it speaks to the importance of pausing to acknowledge where our provision comes from, and making time to celebrate with community even (or especially) after seasons of intense work.
