Deuteronomy 16:12
“You shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt. You shall observe and do these statutes.”
What does Deuteronomy 16:12 mean?
The heart of this verse asks us to let our hardest experiences shape how we treat others. When the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt, they knew desperation, powerlessness, and mistreatment firsthand. God is reminding them that this painful past is actually their greatest teacher about compassion and justice. By connecting their memory of slavery to the statutes (the laws about festivals, generosity, and fair treatment), God is saying: because you know what suffering feels like, you're now equipped to build a community where others don't have to endure that same pain. It's a call to let empathy, not just duty, motivate how we live. Many of us carry our own "Egypt" moments, times when we've been hurt or helpless, and this verse suggests those experiences aren't wasted. They can become the fuel for genuine kindness toward others who are struggling.
