Amos 6:8
““The Lord Yahweh has sworn by himself,” says Yahweh, the God of Armies: “I abhor the pride of Jacob, and detest his fortresses. Therefore I will deliver up the city with all that is in it.”
What does Amos 6:8 mean?
God is expressing deep displeasure with Israel's arrogance and false sense of security. The people had grown comfortable in their wealth and strength, trusting in their own fortifications rather than in God, and their pride had made them indifferent to injustice and the suffering of others around them. When God swears by himself (the strongest possible oath), he's underlining that this judgment is certain and unavoidable. The "city" refers to Samaria, Israel's capital, which would soon fall to the Assyrian empire.
