What does Amos 5:22 mean?
God is saying he won't accept the sacrifices Israel is bringing him because their hearts aren't in the right place. Throughout Amos, the prophet condemns people who perform all the right religious rituals while ignoring justice, cheating the poor, and living selfishly. It's like showing up to a relationship with expensive gifts while treating the person badly the rest of the time: the gifts ring hollow. What God actually wants, as Amos makes clear, is for people to let justice "roll down like waters" and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. The external act of worship without internal integrity and right living doesn't move God's heart at all.
