What does Amos 5:21 mean?
God is expressing his deep frustration with worship that has become hollow ritual while injustice runs rampant in the land. Amos was speaking to ancient Israel during a time of prosperity, when people gathered for religious festivals and ceremonies, yet they were simultaneously cheating the poor and ignoring their own moral failings. He's essentially saying that God would rather see no festivals at all than watch people perform religious duties as if that makes everything okay. This message cuts to something many of us wrestle with: the gap between what we do on the surface and who we actually are, and whether our faith practices mean anything if they don't change how we treat others.
