“It will be that every soul that will not listen to that prophet will be utterly destroyed from among the people.’”
What does Acts 3:23 mean?
Peter is quoting Moses here, reminding his Jewish listeners about an ancient promise that God would send a prophet like Moses himself. The warning attached to that promise was serious: rejecting this coming prophet meant cutting yourself off from God's people and His plan. This isn't primarily about punishment handed down by God, but about the natural consequence of turning away from Him. When you reject the voice calling you toward life and truth, you separate yourself from the community of faith and the healing God offers. Peter's point to his audience was urgent because he believed Jesus was that promised prophet, and he wanted people to understand the weight of their choice about whether to listen to Him or ignore Him. For us reading this today, the passage invites reflection on how we respond when we encounter truth that challenges us. Do we lean in and listen, even when it's uncomfortable, or do we harden ourselves against it? Our response shapes the direction of our spiritual life.
