What does 2 John 1:10 mean?
This verse addresses a specific situation in early Christian communities: false teachers were traveling from place to place, spreading ideas that contradicted core Christian beliefs about Jesus. The instruction to not welcome them into your home was practical and necessary, since hospitality often meant offering lodging, food, and a platform to speak. The point isn't about being unwelcoming to people who disagree with you or hold different opinions. It's about protecting your community from those actively spreading deception about Jesus himself. In context, it's similar to how you might not invite someone into your home who you knew intended to harm your family. For many of us today, this is a reminder that discernment matters, especially in what we accept as truth about Jesus. It also shows that the early church took their beliefs seriously and felt responsible for guarding them, much like a parent guards their household.
