What does 1 Timothy 3:5 mean?
Paul is making a straightforward point about leadership: if someone can't manage their own household well, they're not ready to lead a church. This isn't being harsh, it's practical wisdom. The idea is that the character and skills needed to guide a family through real life (handling conflict, teaching, setting boundaries, staying calm under pressure) are the same ones required to shepherd a community of believers. This applies beyond just church leadership too. It reminds us that integrity flows from the inside out, and that tending to what's closest to us matters deeply. We can't authentically lead or influence others if our own lives and relationships are falling apart. It's an encouragement to invest seriously in the people and responsibilities God has given us right now, wherever we are.
