What does 1 Timothy 3:4 mean?
A leader in the church needs to show good judgment at home first, managing his household with wisdom and earning genuine respect from his family. The phrase "in subjection with all reverence" doesn't mean harsh control, but rather that children see their parent as someone worth listening to because of his character and consistency. Paul's point is simple: if someone can't create an environment of trust and order in his own home, he's not ready to guide a congregation. What happens behind closed doors matters, because the same qualities that make a home run well, steadily and with care, are the ones a church needs.
