1 Samuel 24:3
“He came to the sheep pens by the way, where there was a cave; and Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were staying in the innermost parts of the cave.”
What does 1 Samuel 24:3 mean?
David was hiding in the wilderness, fleeing from King Saul who wanted to kill him. By sheer chance (or, as the story suggests, by God's providence), Saul entered the very cave where David was hiding, alone and vulnerable. David's men saw this as their moment, their chance to eliminate the threat that had been pursuing them for so long. What happens next reveals something beautiful about David's character. Even though he had every practical reason to act, and even though his supporters urged him to, he chose restraint and respect for Saul's position as God's anointed king. This moment shows us that doing what's right isn't always the same as doing what's convenient or even what seems justified by circumstances.
