What does 1 Samuel 24:4 mean?
David's men saw him hiding in a cave while Saul—who was hunting him to kill him—happened to enter that same cave. They interpreted this coincidence as God handing David his enemy on a silver platter, encouraging him to strike. Instead of taking the bait, David chose the harder path: he secretly cut only a piece of Saul's robe as proof he could have killed him, then let Saul leave alive. This moment shows us the difference between what feels justified and what honors God. David had every logical reason to eliminate his threat, and his friends were cheering him on. Yet he recognized that revenge disguised as providence is still revenge. Sometimes the most faithful thing we can do is restrain ourselves when we have power, especially when everyone around us says we should act.
