1 Samuel 16:7
“But Yahweh said to Samuel, “Don’t look on his face, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for I don’t see as man sees. For man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart.””
What does 1 Samuel 16:7 mean?
God is reminding Samuel that human judgment and divine judgment work in completely different ways. Samuel was about to anoint one of Jesse's sons as Israel's next king based on appearance and stature, but God redirected him toward David, the overlooked youngest son whose heart aligned with God's purposes. This doesn't mean outward things don't matter or that we should ignore reality, but rather that they're not what determines someone's true value or potential. When you're struggling to see your own worth, or wondering why you keep getting passed over, this verse reminds you that God sees something in you that others (and sometimes even you yourself) might miss. The deeper qualities of your character, your capacity to trust, and your willingness to seek God's direction are what actually matter in His eyes.
