What does 1 Samuel 16:8 mean?
Jesse was bringing his sons one by one before the prophet Samuel, who had come to anoint the next king of Israel. As each son appeared, Samuel kept saying no, and you can feel the growing tension in the moment. Samuel wasn't making these decisions based on what he could see on the surface, the way humans naturally judge by appearance and credentials, but he was waiting for God's confirmation about who should be chosen. What's quietly powerful here is that even when things seem to be going wrong (son after son being rejected), there's still trust in the process. Jesse didn't know it yet, but the son who would become king wasn't even present at this gathering, working alone in the fields. Sometimes our disappointments and rejections point us toward something better than we imagined, even when we can't see it in the moment.
