1 Samuel 16:2
“Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” Yahweh said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh.”
What does 1 Samuel 16:2 mean?
Samuel is terrified. He's been sent to secretly anoint a new king to replace Saul, but Saul is paranoid and violent, so Samuel fears for his life if the current king finds out. God's response isn't to dismiss his fear but to give him practical cover: bring an animal for sacrifice and use that as a public reason for his visit. This teaches us something real about how God works with our anxiety. He doesn't always remove the danger or demand we ignore it; sometimes he simply gives us what we need to move forward wisely. The sacrifice itself was genuine (Samuel wasn't lying), so God's suggestion accomplishes his purpose while respecting both the real threat and Samuel's legitimate caution. There's comfort in a God who understands our fear and helps us take the next faithful step anyway.
