“Yahweh said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite; for I have provided a king for myself among his sons.””
What does 1 Samuel 16:1 mean?
God is telling Samuel to stop grieving over Saul's failure and move forward with a new purpose. Samuel has been stuck mourning a king who turned away from God, but the Lord gently redirects him: there's someone else already chosen, waiting to be found. The "horn with oil" refers to the practice of anointing leaders as a sign of God's blessing and appointment, so God is essentially saying, "Pack what you need and go do the work I'm calling you to do right now." This speaks to anyone who's been holding onto disappointment about how things fell apart. Sometimes we need permission to let go of what didn't work out and trust that God has already been working ahead of us. The next chapter of our story may look nothing like what we expected, but it can still be exactly what we need.
