What does 1 Kings 18:9 mean?
Obadiah, a faithful servant in the corrupt court of King Ahab, is speaking here in desperation. He's just been asked to help find the prophet Elijah, and he's terrified that if he does, Ahab will kill Elijah anyway, and then blame Obadiah for the failure. His anguished question "How have I sinned?" captures what many of us feel in impossible situations: a sense that we're being punished unfairly, caught between conflicting demands we can't win against. What makes this moment so human is that Obadiah isn't angry at God so much as bewildered. He's trying to understand why his faithfulness (the text tells us he hid and protected God's prophets) would result in his own death. Sometimes when we're squeezed between a rock and a hard place, that's exactly what we cry out: not understanding why God has allowed us into this situation at all.
