What does 1 John 4:8 mean?

This simple statement cuts to the heart of what John wants us to understand: love isn't just something God does or recommends, it's who God fundamentally is. When we refuse to love others, we're revealing a disconnect from knowing God at all, because you can't genuinely encounter the source of love itself without being transformed by it. John wrote this to early Christians who were struggling with how to live out their faith in real, messy community. He's saying that if we claim to know God but live in bitterness, coldness, or indifference toward others, something is missing in our relationship with God. Love toward others becomes the evidence that we've actually met him, not just believed facts about him.
