“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves has been born of God, and knows God.”
What does 1 John 4:7 mean?
John is writing to people who've already committed to following Jesus, and he's calling them back to the most essential thing: loving each other. He's saying that when we love others, we're not just being nice—we're actually participating in something divine, because love itself comes from God's nature. What makes this especially powerful is the promise woven through it. When you genuinely love someone, you're doing something that connects you to God in a real way. You don't have to have it all figured out theologically or feel particularly spiritual to experience this. The act of love—showing up for someone, caring about their wellbeing, letting your guard down—is itself evidence that God's presence is working in you. It's John's way of saying that faith isn't only about what you believe in your head; it shows up in how you treat the people around you.
