1 Corinthians 3:15
“If any man’s work is burned, he will suffer loss, but he himself will be saved, but as through fire.”
What does 1 Corinthians 3:15 mean?
Paul is talking about the final judgment of believers' work and character, not about salvation itself. He's saying that while our core salvation in Christ is secure (we ourselves will be saved), the things we've built our lives on—our choices, priorities, and spiritual investments—will be tested and refined. Some of what we thought mattered won't survive that scrutiny, and we'll experience real loss and disappointment about that. The "as through fire" image captures something important: just as fire burns away what's worthless while leaving what's genuine, we'll pass through this testing, but we'll come through it. It's a sobering reminder that following Jesus matters in concrete ways, not just in getting a ticket to heaven. At the same time, it's deeply reassuring that this judgment doesn't determine our standing with God; we're already saved.
