1 Corinthians 14:2
“For he who speaks in another language speaks not to men, but to God; for no one understands; but in the Spirit he speaks mysteries.”
What does 1 Corinthians 14:2 mean?
When someone speaks in a language others don't understand, they're having a private conversation with God rather than communicating with the people around them. Paul isn't saying this is wrong, but he's pointing out that speaking in tongues (a spiritual gift some early Christians experienced) functions differently than regular teaching or preaching, which are meant to build up the whole community. If you're speaking mysteries in the Spirit, you're expressing something deep between you and God, but the people listening won't grasp what's happening unless there's interpretation. This matters to Paul because he cares about church gatherings actually helping everyone present grow in faith together.
