What does 1 Corinthians 14:3 mean?
When someone speaks God's truth in a gathered community, the real measure of it isn't how impressive or mysterious the words sound—it's whether they build people up, stir their courage, or bring them comfort. Paul is contrasting prophecy with speaking in unknown tongues, reminding the Corinthians that the whole point of sharing a word from God is to strengthen the people listening to you. This applies beyond formal prophecy too: when we share encouragement, honest words, or hope rooted in our faith with others, we're fulfilling this same purpose. It's a good filter for our speech—does what I'm about to say help someone become more whole, more brave, or more at peace?
