What does Zechariah 1:7 mean?

This verse marks the specific moment when God began speaking to Zechariah with a series of important visions meant to encourage the Jewish people. They had just returned from exile in Babylon and were struggling to rebuild their temple and community, so God was sending this prophet a message of hope and direction. The precise date and genealogy are included to establish that this is a genuine, authoritative word from the Lord, not just someone's personal opinion. What follows in the next verses are eight symbolic visions designed to remind God's people that he hasn't abandoned them and has plans to restore and protect them.
