What does Ruth 1:5 mean?
Naomi has now lost everything that anchored her to life in Moab—her husband Elimelech, and both her sons Mahlon and Chilion. She came to this foreign land as a wife and mother, and now stands alone as a widow with no sons to provide for her or carry on the family name, which in that culture meant losing her place and security. The word "bereaved" captures something deeper than just grief; it's the stripping away of identity and belonging. In this moment, Naomi has every reason to feel abandoned, which is exactly the darkness she expresses in the verses that follow.
