What does Romans 9:32 mean?
Paul is explaining why many Jewish people of his time struggled to accept Jesus as their Messiah. They were pursuing righteousness through strict adherence to God's law, trying to earn their way to God through their own effort and obedience. But God's way of salvation works differently, he says, requiring trust and surrender rather than achievement. When Jesus came, especially as a crucified Messiah (which seemed to contradict their expectations), many couldn't accept him because he didn't fit their system of earning God's favor through works. The "stumbling stone" is Jesus himself, and the tragedy Paul describes is that people miss salvation not because God is unfair, but because they're looking in the wrong direction, trusting in their own righteousness instead of receiving God's gift through faith.
