What does Romans 9:30 mean?

Paul is pointing out something that seems backwards: people who weren't even trying to earn God's approval through rule-following actually found themselves in right relationship with God, while others who worked hard at it missed the mark. He's saying that righteousness comes through faith, not through checking boxes or proving yourself worthy. This was shocking to people who believed salvation was something you had to earn or deserve through your own effort. What Paul discovers is that the path to being right with God is surprisingly simple and open to everyone, yet often overlooked by those convinced there must be a harder way.
