Romans 9:20
“But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed ask him who formed it, “Why did you make me like this?””
What does Romans 9:20 mean?
Paul is responding to a hard question: if God controls everything, why does he hold us responsible for our choices? Rather than answer with logic, he shifts perspective entirely. He's asking us to sit with the reality that we're created beings addressing our Creator, and that posture matters. It's not that we can never ask God honest questions, but there's a difference between wrestling with God in humility and demanding that he justify himself as though we were his equals. This can be comforting when we're tempted to think God owes us an explanation for suffering or circumstances we don't understand, reminding us that trust sometimes means resting in what we can't fully see.
