Romans 9:15
“For he said to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.””
What does Romans 9:15 mean?
God is reminding Moses (and us) that his mercy isn't something we can demand or earn, but something he gives freely according to his own nature and choices. When Moses asked to see God's glory, God responded with this statement, emphasizing that his kindness flows from who he is, not from what we deserve or what we might bargain for. This can feel unsettling when we're wondering why life is hard or why God seems to help some people and not others. But it's also meant to be comforting: God's mercy isn't limited by rules or conditions we have to meet. He extends compassion to the broken, the forgotten, and the undeserving simply because that's the character of a loving God. If mercy had to be earned, none of us would truly have it.
