What does Romans 7:8 mean?
Paul is describing something deeply human that happens when we're told not to do something: the prohibition itself can actually make us want it more. When a rule exists, sin uses that boundary as a launching point to awaken desire within us, creating all sorts of cravings and longings we might not have felt otherwise. This doesn't mean the law is bad or that God made a mistake. Rather, Paul is showing how sin is cunning. A commandment is like holding up a mirror to expose what's already inside us, and when we see that mirror, our rebellious nature tends to kick in. Without any law to push against, sin lies dormant, almost invisible. But the moment there's a boundary, sin springs to life and fights against it.
