Romans 6:15
“What then? Shall we sin, because we are not under law, but under grace? May it never be!”
What does Romans 6:15 mean?
Paul is answering a question that might naturally arise from his teaching about grace. If God's forgiveness is freely given and not based on keeping rules, won't people just go ahead and sin without consequence? His response is a firm no, because being under grace fundamentally changes who we are and what we want to do. The point isn't that grace removes all consequences or that breaking God's law doesn't matter. Rather, when we experience the reality of being loved and accepted by God despite our failures, something shifts inside us. We're motivated not by fear of punishment, but by gratitude and the desire to live in a way that honors the one who saved us. True freedom from the law doesn't mean freedom to harm ourselves and others, it means being released from the cycle of shame and condemnation so we can actually choose what's good.
