What does Romans 6:1 mean?

Paul raises a question that might seem logical but is actually dangerous: if God's grace covers our sins, shouldn't we keep sinning so we get more grace? He's addressing a misunderstanding that could twist the good news into an excuse for doing whatever we want. The question itself shows how some people were already twisting Paul's message about freedom in Christ, thinking forgiveness meant permission to live however pleased them. Paul asks this not to suggest it's a good idea, but to firmly reject it in the verses that follow.
