Romans 4:5
“But to him who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.”
What does Romans 4:5 mean?
This verse speaks to something that can feel almost too good to be true: you don't earn your way into God's favor through good behavior or religious effort. Instead, righteousness comes through trusting God to do what you cannot do for yourself, especially when you recognize you're imperfect and in need of that grace. Paul is contrasting two ways of approaching God. One is like a paycheck, where you earn what you get. The other is receiving a gift, where someone else covers what you owe. When you stop trying to prove yourself and instead believe that God genuinely accepts and transforms you anyway, that trust itself is what counts as righteousness in God's eyes. It's the turning point where you move from striving to receiving.
