“What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather, has found according to the flesh?”
What does Romans 4:1 mean?
Paul is asking his readers to think carefully about what Abraham actually achieved through his own effort and merit (the phrase "according to the flesh" means through human strength and accomplishment). He's setting up an important point: Abraham didn't earn God's favor through his own works or status, no matter how respected he was as the founder of the Jewish people. This question invites us to reconsider what we think makes us right with God, especially if we've been taught that obedience or achievement is what matters most.
