Romans 3:7
“For if the truth of God through my lie abounded to his glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner?”
What does Romans 3:7 mean?
Paul is wrestling here with a sneaky objection someone might raise: if God's truth becomes even more obvious when contrasted with our lies, doesn't that actually serve his glory? So why should we be held accountable for sinning in that case? The answer Paul is setting up (and gives more fully in the verses that follow) is that this kind of reasoning is backwards. We can't do evil so that good may come, and we can't excuse our sin just because God might somehow use it for his purposes. That would make morality meaningless and turn God into someone who needs our wrongdoing to look good, which isn't true. Our job is to pursue what's right, trusting that God's plans don't depend on our disobedience to succeed.
